Patient of the Week:
I liked her. As a character, I thought she was well differentiated from the rest of the crowd, particularly with that unique little ability of hers to diagnose her own stroke. I mean, that’s pretty nifty, because sure: a lot of people know that mnemonic device. BUT, they are never presented the chance (thankfully, I think) to use it. I don’t know. I just think it gave her a bit more depth, making her seem more like a real person than just a character they needed to give an illness to. Does that make sense?
That being said, I think he blind devotion to the birth of the baby, not the baby itself, was a bit too intense. I mean, ‘The baby dies, or both of you die’ would not be a great thing to hear, but it would also be a relatively smooth decision. Not easy, don’t get me wrong. I’m being careful with my diction here. But ultimately, you would not say ‘if my baby can’t be born death can have us both!’ That seems almost… mentally unstable to me. Suicidal, in a way. I’m not sure. It just doesn’t sit well.
I loved the pictures she was taking. Though, she got them developed awfully fast for someone with no family and no on-screen friend visitations. Hm. I honestly wish I could travel through my days and take pictures of people. Not because I want a visual record of my experiences, though that would be awesome, but I would love to capture some of the expressions and moments of laughter and fun that just seem too fleeting. Particularly in the theatre. Just to have those moments immortalized… it’s sentimental, but it’s amazing. That might be most of the reason why I liked the character so much.
Cuddy:
What can I say? I loved her. Did any of you really have any doubt that I would be doing metaphoric back flips for this episode? She played House well enough, channeling him a bit too… well. She pointed it out a lot, and I would have appreciated a much more subtle approach. Her desperation and, here’s that word again, blind drive to save the baby made the end seem like amazing luck than real medical prowess. I mean, sure, she took a dangerous risk to save those lives, but House called it. She wasn’t doing right by the patient and the process of medicine. She let her emotions get the better of her.
Still, she had some amazing lines. I love the way Lisa Edelstein delivers almost all of her lines. If she were ever to teach a class on Line Delivery, I would maim, murder and steal to get into it. Don’t doubt that. She’s amazing. My favorites came with, more often than not, House to hear and/or prompt them. When she finds him in her office and he says if she’s going to play him he would play her, and she replies that he ‘doesn’t have the cleavage for it’. Yeah. I pretty much died. And I love how loaded her ‘if there is one doctor I would trust to save my baby, it would be Doctor House’ statement was.
I could –probably- write an analytical essay on the characters of both House and Cuddy, their relationship, and the differences of their tact just from that one line.
Beyond being disappointed that the episode did not do any justice to making her look like a great doctor, (though, I’m still harboring the belief that she IS amazing) I thought there was some amazing characterization for her. She came away from this whole ordeal knowing a lot more about the inner workings of House’s mind, and through that forged a new respect for their battles of wills. She now has the insight into his side of the argument. I wonder if that will affect the way she deals with him in the future?
House:
Pretty normal. Amazing, always a pleasure to watch, captivating every time he was on screen. He felt wasted, though, in this episode, as far as subplot went. The whole thing with tattling on Cameron and Chase, as well as his ‘trip’… it all seemed superfluous. If he had focused on the photographer and Cuddy, while the others did their thing without the banter about his vacation spots… I don’t think the episode would have lost anything.
BUT, and here comes some UBER FANGIRLING, how cute was the end?
I don’t care if he really was planning a trip, or just pissing with people, his moment with Cuddy at the end was priceless. Not only did he step towards her just to be almost uncomfortably close to her face while they spoke, he gave her the most intriguing once-over I’ve ever seen. She directly told him to go on his trip, to be happy. And then there was that pause as he watched her move away, his expression CLEARLY displaying what he was going to do with that ticket. I had no doubt that the next scene would involve him throwing it out, and I wasn’t wrong. Yeah, yeah, I’m reading too far into it because I’m a total House/Cuddy fangirl, but come on. He did not want to go anywhere because he’s happy when he’s arguing with her, when he’s working on cases at the hospital, and when he’s with his team. See? I’m not completely selfish.
Wilson:
I’m getting really tired of writing.
So, he pretty much failed as Cuddy’s Cuddy.
Cameron:
Shut the fuck up, Cameron.
Chase:
Now this was a pleasant surprise. Remember how last week I was complaining that I couldn’t see any real affection in Chase towards Cameron, and I was thinking everyone was just jumping the gun? The writers proved me wonderfully wrong on this front. He was glowing when he was looking at that picture of her. That’s cute. He clearly harbors deep feelings for her, and it’s so sweet. I’m not a Cameron fan, yet Chase has me cheering for him. Who knows, maybe he can make her stop being so damn annoying (to me)?
Foreman:
Didn’t do too much. He’s still great, and I love him more every time I see him… even when he isn’t doing anything. I loved his reaction when he found out Chase and Cameron were together, the last one to get in on the loop. Poor guy. Chase said something very interesting, that I have been imagining but unwilling to put into words That Foreman seemed to care quite a bit about Cameron. There was this moment of jealousy from Chase to Foreman, because Cameron seems to have, minus the sex, a better relationship with Foreman than himself. I don’t know. I’ll have to start paying more attention to these three, I guess.
Similarities to Scrubs:
Now before I say anything I have to put this disclaimer here: I’m not saying anyone copied anything. I’m just pointing out parallels in story lines, because I’ve noticed them and I find it interesting. Plus, they’re my two favorite shows, so why the hell not?
The photographer: Scrubs also had a patient that took a lot of pictures, and there was a sweet moment where the audience sort of got to sift through all these candid moments the patient caught on film. I loved it in both shows, and I wish I could get my hands on those pictures. For real. –shifty eyes- I’m so lame.
The baby hand: When the baby reached out and touched House’s hand… the same thing happened in a recent episode in Scrubs. Turk was operating on Jordan’s baby while it was still in the womb, and it reached out and took his finger. It had the same affect on Turk as it did on House, though, Turk is generally a much nicer guy than House, so his moment was a little less powerful than that halting, completely absorbing instant with House.
